Background
The Palestine History Tapestry illustrates the history of the land of Palestine, from the Neolithic era to the present. It has been made by Palestinian women within and outside Palestine, many of them in refugee camps across the Middle East.
The Tapestry is an expression of sumud (steadfastness), and solidarity. It draws attention to the history and heritage of the Palestinian people and their land, and to their internationally confirmed right to return to the homes from which they were expelled in 1948. The Tapestry is likely to be the largest collection of illustrative work ever produced by Palestinian embroiderers.
Project
The tapestries have now found a permanent home in the Palestine Museum US. Having designed the Palestinian History Tapestry Project’s previous brochure, I was asked to create a document to mark the Project’s achievements before its move to America. We decided to create a ‘diary’ that records the key events in the Project’s history, to give to everyone involved as a way of acknowledging their contribution, alongside an art book showcasing all 104 embroidered panels. This beautifully designed, 116-page book gives each panel its own page, allowing each one to shine. Funds raised from the book’s sales will be used to provide continued support for the Project and Palestinian embroiderers.
